To understand it better let’s find out stages of hair growth cycle
There are 3 stages through which each hair follicle goes through.
1) Growth Stage – During this stage, cells of the hair matrix divide. These new cells are added to the base of the hair root and existing hairs are pushed upwards due to which the hair grows longer.
2) Regression Stage – This stage is for 2 to 3 weeks. During this stage, the cells of the hair matrix stop dividing; the hair follicle atrophies; and the hair stops growing.
3) Resting Stage – This stage remains for 3 months. During this stage, the hair stops growing and a new growth cycle begins after this stage.
Following the Resting Stage, new hair begins to grow in the place of the old hair.
Normal Hair Loss – In an adult, hair loss of about 50 to 70 hair per day is considered to be normal and does not require any treatment.
However the problem of hair loss and thinning begins when the phase of hair growth does not keep pace with the phase of hair loss, at that time hair loss is more visible and requires treatment.
So what can be the reason for hairfall ?
Hormonal Changes-Hormonal imbalances may cause thinning of hair. Hair mainly goes through a growth phase and a resting phase. Because of hormonal imbalances, the growth phase period becomes shorter and the resting phase increases.
Lack of Proper Nutrition-Lack of proper nutrition also contributes to hair loss. Hair strands are made up of protein. If your diet doesn’t have adequate protein, then your hair will not grow properly. Biotin, Folic acid, minerals, and vitamins will stimulate hair growth and follicles.
Thyroid-Thyroid disorders cause hair loss in severe and prolonged cases. Since thyroid and alopecia areata are both autoimmune diseases, one can trigger the other. Hair fall due to thyroid disorder can be treated once the underlying hormonal imbalance is fixed, although it can take some time for the hair to grow back.
Alopecia Areata- Is an autoimmune disease that causes hair loss in spots. In this condition, the immune cells of the body mistake the hair cells as a foreign substance and start destroying them.
Gender -Females are more prone to hair loss due to hormonal changes during puberty, post-delivery, and menopause.
Severe emotional stress – Emotional trauma or stress affects the hypothalamus and can cause certain hormonal imbalances leading to hair loss.
Certain hairstyles- Like tight braids or ponytails where the hair is tightly pulled back can lead to traction alopecia. Indiscriminate use of hair color and heating tools can damage the hair and lead to hair fall.
Genetics-Genetics play a major role in determining the condition of your hair when you grow older. With initial involvement, you may still possess good hair despite having bad genes.
Dandruff-Dandruff is a scalp condition wherein flakiness on the scalp is present along with itching. Dandruff loosens the hair follicles causing hair loss, also the itching and the attended scratching of the scalp leads to hair fall.
Certain condition of scalp such as fungal infection, lichen planus, eczema, scalp folliculitis, scalp psoriasis can also cause hairfall.
