An imbalance in a female's  sex hormones progesterone and estrogen which leads to enlarged ovaries that have small fluid filled cysts.it is a complex metabolic, endocrine, reproductive disorder that  affects a woman’s psycho-social health as it impairs femininity due to menstrual abnormalities, infertility, obesity, hirsutism, hair loss, and facial acne.

According to WHO PCOS is one of the commonest and rapidly increasing increasing hormonal disorder affecting women of reproductive age(childbearing age). In Maharashtra upto 22% of female in reproductive age group is suffering from PCOS and still many are undiagnosed.

 

Cause of PCOS

There is no specific cause why PCOS occur, but  scientific  researches says that one of the major cause can be heredity and mode of living (lifestyle). other cause are

  1. High level of insulin
  2. Excess production of androgen I.e male hormone
  3. Sedentary lifestyle
  4. Heredity

 

Symptoms of PCOS

  1. Irregular menses or absence of menses for months
  2. Oligomenorrhoea( less menstrual flow)
  3. Acne
  4. Hirsutism, abnormal growth of hair
  5. Androgenic alopecia [hair loss]
  6. Weight gain
  7. Darkening of the skin specially along neck creases, underneath the breasts or in the groin
  8. Mood swings, irritability

 

Health problems linked to PCOS

PCOS  when not treated can led to complication like diabetes infertility dyslipidaemia( high cholesterol), hypertension(increase in blood pressure), permanent hirsutism and other heart disorder

 

Types of PCOS

  1. HYPERANDROGENISM, normal cycle, Poly cystic ovary in ultrasound.
  2. OLIGO-ANOVULATION, normal androgen’s, normal ultrasound.
  3. HYPERANDROGENISM, OLIGO-ANOVULATION, normal ultrasound.
  4. HYPERANDROGENISM, OLIGO-ANOVULATION,Polycystic ovary in ultrasound.

 

Treating PCOS

Oral Contraceptives/ hormonal pills are not the best method

Oral contraceptives can temporary effect in regularizing the menstrual cycle for as long as medicine are taken but once you stop the medicine the cycle stops. Long term use of such medicine can cause sever complications.

 

Some useful tips in managing PCOS

  1. Nutrition or diet

If you have PCOS chances are high that you have high level of insulin rresistance( high blood sugar),following points you need to consider

  1. Manage your sugar intake and refined carbohydrates
  2. Avoid preservatives and artificial sweeteners.
  3. Add foods with anti-inflammatory properties, such as green leafy vegetables,tomatoes,etc.
  4. Take iron-rich foods, such as broccoli, spinach, dates, etc.
  5. Magnesium-rich foods bananas, spinach, almonds, and cashews are good for PCOs.
  6. Eating a high-fibre diet, like beans, lentils, pear, broccoli, etc. 
  7. Don’t skip meals
  1. Exercise

Regular exercise will help you control your blood sugar levels. Daily exercise can help avoid insulin resistance in PCOD women. Every day activity of at least one workout or 30 minutes of brisk walking can result in significant weight loss.

  1. Stress

You should use any methods you find effective to reduce your stress, including yoga, meditation, listening to music.

  1. Sleep

Keep an eye on your sleeping habits as well. Regularly getting eight hours of sleep is crucial.

  1. Supplements

Make sure you are getting enough sun exposure to provide your body the vitamin D it needs
